HMS Psychiatry is proud to announce the 2021 Stuart T. Hauser, M.D., PhD., Mentorship Awards. The Hauser Award will be awarded to a faculty member for outstanding sustained mentorship of medical students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty in the areas of adult and child psychiatry, human development, and psychosocial research.
It is widely understood that successful career development in basic/clinical psychiatry (teaching, research, clinical, administration) requires the experience of quality mentoring relationships. We request your nominations for candidates to receive this unique honor. The award recipient will be announced at the HMS Psychiatry Mysell Lecture.
The award is named in honor of Stuart T. Hauser, MD, PhD, Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and President of the Judge Baker Children’s Center. Dr. Hauser was nationally and internationally known for his work in adolescent development and his focus on resilience to adversity. His career in Mentoring “across generations” was most clearly and memorably expressed in his work and leadership in what is now formally renamed, in his memory, the Stuart T. Hauser, M.D., Ph.D. Harvard Clinical Research Training Program (CRTP) in Biological and Social Psychiatry.

NOMINATION GUIDELINES
2021 DEADLINE: Monday, February 26, 2021
Your recommendation should reflect the extent to which the mentor has provided sponsorship, encouragement and support for the career and/or personal development of yourself as well as for the career and/or personal development of other faculty, trainees, and students. Please be mindful when making your nomination that you are doing so for someone who merits recognition as an effective and outstanding mentor. This includes clinicians, researchers, educators, and/or administrators.
The guidelines for submitting a nomination are as follows:
Complete the nomination form at: TBD (form will be live soon after the eCommons outage resolves)
Nominations must include a narrative of how this individual's mentoring has affected your career and/or the careers of others. Nominations without such information will not be considered. It is often helpful to provide specific anecdotes/examples about the mentor or ways in which the mentor has shown an investment in one’s professional and/or personal development. The following are a few examples of the qualities one might look for in a mentor.
- Long-term commitment to mentoring
- Advisor/Guide
- Developer of talent/Coach
- Opener of doors/Sponsor
- Interpreter of organizational and/or professional rules
- Successful role model
Each nominator may name only one individual for the award.
Each nominator may solicit additional nominating letters for his/her nominee, not to exceed four letters in total.
Nominator must be or have been mentored by the nominee.
Nominees from the previous two years will be considered if a new cover letter is sent re-nominating the faculty member (nominating letters from the previous submission will be used).
