## Dupont Warren Fellowship Award

Available through the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, this award will provide a fellowship stipend, [equal to the salary of a full-time PGY-5 ](https://www.partners.org/Graduate-Medical-Education/Residents-Clinical-Fellows/Salary-Benefits/Salary.aspx)for full-time awards, effective July 1, 2026. Historically, 4-5 awards are made annually.

**Award**
In keeping with the intentions of the donor to create opportunities for advanced study and research in Psychiatry and to serve as a bridge between clinical training and the development of a research career, stipends will be awarded to eligible candidates. Fellows receiving an award will be asked to stipulate that they will devote a certain amount of effort to research to the exclusion of clinical, administrative, and other activities during fellowship. **This research can be 80% or greater for full-time awards and 50% for half-time awards.** For the latter, the applicant and mentor must provide a clear rationale and information on the applicant's other half-time activities. **Additionally, for highly meritorious applications, the Committee will consider a request for a two-year full-time Fellowship award.** The award will also cover 25% of the fringe benefits charged by the Fellow’s institution.

Further, to promote research development, **half-time stipends** at the equivalent of a half-time PGY-4 stipend may be awarded for use in the **PGY-4 year**. *While a solid research plan is expected, review criteria for these half-time PGY-4 stipends will focus primarily on the strength of the training plan, quality and extent of mentoring, and the candidate’s potential to develop into a clinician-scientist.* **The committee will also consider applications from those who are interested in doing just a one-year half-time project who are in the PGY-5 or higher year** (as long as no more than five years have passed since the end of ACGME accredited clinical training at the time of application).

In the event that a Dupont Warren Fellow receives an NIH R or K Award, or some other significant award, the fellow will be asked to relinquish the remaining portion of their Fellowship at the time the NIH or other significant award begins.

It is expected that recipients will update the Research Committee by submitting a brief summary of projects at six month intervals and a final report at the end of the fellowship.

**Eligibility Requirements**
Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for an award:

- MD degree (or MD equivalent, e.g., DO, MBBS, etc.) at a PGY-4 level or higher at time of application, and be a member of the HMS Department of Psychiatry for a full stipend;
- MD degree (or MD equivalent, e.g., DO, MBBS, etc.) at a PGY-3 level at time of application, and be a member of the HMS Department of Psychiatry for stipend paid at half the PGY-4 rate;
- No more than five years have passed since the end of ACGME accredited clinical training at the time of application;
- At the time of application, applicants cannot hold a faculty appointment at the Assistant Professor level or higher;
- Applicants who have received an NIH R award as the PI are not eligible to apply;
- Applicants who have received an NIH K award are not eligible to apply for any of the salaried fellowship awards (i.e., Dupont Warren, Kaplen, Zinberg), but K award recipients are eligible for a Livingston award;
- Individuals who have already been awarded a Dupont Warren, Kaplen or Zinberg fellowship award will not be permitted to re-apply for any of those awards, EXCEPT if they initially received one of those awards to be used in their PGY-4 year at half-time effort for 1 year;
- An individual who receives a Livingston award in one year will be permitted to apply for and receive a salaried fellowship (i.e., Dupont Warren, Kaplen, Zinberg award) in a future year, but not for another Livingston award.
- Applicants may apply for multiple awards using the single general application form. However, **it will no longer be possible to receive both a salaried fellowship award (i.e., Dupont Warren, Kaplen, Zinberg fellowship) and a Livingston award in the same year**.
- 25% of the fellow’s institution’s fringe benefits will be paid by the fellowship; the remainder of fringe benefits (and indirect costs) must be funded by the sponsoring institution.

**Application Process**
**Complete HMS Psychiatry Application for the Dupont Warren, Kaplen, Zinberg, and Livingston Awards Form** **online. The submission deadline is Tuesday, December 2nd, 2025.** (Award recipients will be announced in February.)

**The following items must be uploaded as a single PDF to the Qualtrics application form** to be considered for the fellowship award:

1\) A **cover letter**, not to exceed one page, with a brief introduction of the candidate and their credentials and institutional affiliation, a narrative description of the proposed project (3 lines max), describe the mentoring team and how the fellowship, if funded, will help advance the applicant’s research career and next steps, e.g., how the data will be used (presentations, publications, grant applications) to advance their career. If there is anything additional that you would like to mention about your application or about yourself as an applicant, please mention it here.

2\) A current **curriculum vitae** in the [current Harvard format](https://fa.hms.harvard.edu/faculty-medicine-cv-guidelines). Although the Harvard format does not allow the listing of submitted papers, please add these along with the name of the journal to which the manuscript was submitted.

3\) **Research Plan**. This should include: (a) title of project, (b) brief abstract not to exceed 150 words, (c) description of the specific aims of the project, (d) background and significance of the proposed research project, (e) description of the research design, (f) description of methods, (g) discussion of proposed analyses to be used in the project, (h) timeline for completing the project during the fellowship year, and (i) whether IRB approval has already been obtained, and if not, the plan for obtaining it. If a two-year full-time award is requested for the Dupont Warren fellowship, a clear rationale for the extended project timeline should be provided. The Research Plan has an absolute limit of 4 pages, single-spaced, with standard type size of 15 characters per inch (using Arial or Times New Roman 11 font). One extra page will be allowed for a listing of referenced literature. Appendices will not be accepted.

4\) **Training Plan**. Please provide a description of your training plan, including long-term career goals, planned coursework, mentorship schedule, planned manuscript and grant submissions, presentations, and how any award or fellowship would help achieve your research goals. (The Training page should be limited to 1-page.)

5\) **Mentor Statement**. Mentoring is a key component of evaluating the candidate for an award. The mentor will work with the applicant to select a project that is feasible within the time frame and budget proposed. Support from the Fellow’s faculty mentor is an important factor in the evaluation of the application. The mentor must address each item in the [Mentor Statement](/file_url/243). The applicant is expected to work closely with their mentor to develop an application that is both scientifically rigorous and feasible within the budget and time commitment proposed. If there is more than one primary mentor, each primary mentor must separately complete the Mentor Statement. If there are multiple mentors, but only one primary mentor, the primary mentor should be the person to complete the Mentor Statement, and be sure to mention the names of the other mentors on the form. Non-primary mentors are welcome, but not required, to also complete the Mentor Statement.

6\) **Other Support**. A listing of other research resources available to support the project (e.g., supplies, technical assistance, diagnostic laboratory tests).

7\) A **letter from the head of the sponsoring hospital department** which needs to include a statement of willingness to assume the cost of fringe benefits, and commitment to protect time for research. This letter is required for Dupont Warren, Kaplen, and Zinberg applicants, and optional for Livingston applicants. Livingston applicants could include a statement of commitment to protect time for research to demonstrate institutional support for the feasibility of the project.

8\) **Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR)**, broadly defined by the NIH, as the application of best practices in the proposing, performing, or reviewing research, or in reporting research results regardless of the scientific or scholarly discipline. Please describe completed and planned trainings throughout the fellowship.

9\) All projects will be reviewed closely for feasibility and the recruitment plan will be evaluated. Clinical trials in particular will need to clearly demonstrate feasibility. Projects involving large scale clinical trials with multiple groups must provide additional assurances that the proposed study has sufficient financial support and can be completed in the proposed time period. Projects that include drug studies or new devices that do not have approved **IND or NDA certification** at the time of application will not be considered.

The maximum award will be equal to the [salary of a full-time PGY-5](https://www.partners.org/Graduate-Medical-Education/Residents-Clinical-Fellows/Salary-Benefits/Salary.aspx) for full-time awards, but may be less due to an awardee's institutional salary limits for their position. In most years, only one Kaplen fellowship will be awarded annually. However, there may be occasional years where there is sufficient funding to offer two Kaplen fellowships.

**Award**
The Kaplen Fellowship was endowed specifically to support training in research on depression and allied affective disorders. Funds are to be used solely for salary support. Fellows receiving an award will be asked to stipulate that they will devote a certain amount of effort to research to the exclusion of clinical, administrative, and other activities during fellowship. **This research effort can be 80% or greater for full-time awards and 50% for half-time awards.** For the latter, the applicant and mentor must provide a clear rationale and information on the applicant's other half-time activities. ## Zinberg Fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry Research

The Norman E. Zinberg Fellowship was established to honor the memory of Dr. Zinberg, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. The Fellowship provides support to carry on his commitment to teaching, the training of psychiatric residents, clinical research and psychoanalysis. The Zinberg Fellowship is available through the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

The Zinberg Fellowship now offers one half-time (50% effort) fellowship award lasting one year, effective July 1, 2026**.** The maximum award will be equal to [half the salary of a PGY-5](https://www.massgeneralbrigham.org/en/education-and-training/graduate-medical-education/resources/hr), but may be less due to an awardee's institutional salary limit for their position. The award will also cover 25% of the fringe benefits charged by the Fellow’s institution.

**Award**
The Norman E. Zinberg Fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry Research was endowed specifically to support training in research on alcohol and drug abuse disorders. Theoretical or applied research projects that include a social-psychological, public policy, or psychotherapeutic component will be given highest priority. Because Dr. Zinberg was noted for his hands-on approach to address how drugs affect people in natural settings, and because the practice of polydrug use has grown, priority will also be given to proposals that address *current* drug abuse problems that afflict society (for example, the opioid epidemic). Research proposals that emphasize a humanistic approach rather than relying mostly on technology will be most responsive to this notice.

Fellows receiving an award will be asked to stipulate that they will devote 50% effort to research to the exclusion of clinical, administrative, and other activities during fellowship.

Further, to promote research development, half-time stipends at the equivalent of a half-time PGY-4 stipend may be awarded for use in the PGY-4 year.

The applicant and mentor must provide a clear rationale and information on the applicant's other half-time activities. Preference will be given to applicants who have an MD degree and are within five years of completion of residency training at the time of application. The committee will consider applications from those who have progressed farther from their training, but a rationale should be provided in the application for consideration of such applicants. Applications also will be considered from junior investigators who have achieved faculty status of Instructor, but not from those holding the rank of Assistant Professor or above. Applicants who complete the ACGME Partners Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship and who wish to pursue a second fellowship year conducting research in addiction psychiatry are strongly encouraged to apply. *Review criteria focus primarily on the strength of the research plan, training plan, quality and extent of mentoring, the candidate’s potential to develop into a clinician-scientist and the degree to which the application reflects the spirit of Dr. Zinberg’s legacy.*

It is expected that recipients will update the Research Committee by submitting a summary of progress on their projects at six month intervals and a final report at the end of the fellowship.

A Zinberg Fellow who receives an NIH R or K award, or some other significant award, will be asked to relinquish the remaining portion of their Fellowship at the time the NIH award begins.

**Eligibility Requirements**

Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for an award:

- Applicants need to commit 50% effort to research;
- MD (or MD equivalent, e.g., DO, MBBS, etc.) degree at PGY-4 level or higher at time of application, and/or PhD degree, and be a member of the HMS Department of Psychiatry, for a stipend paid at the PGY-5 rate for 50% effort; Psychology trainees are eligible to apply if they will have completed all of the requirements for their PhD or PsyD by July 1, 2026 (for a Zinberg start date of July 1, 2026);
- MD (or MD equivalent, e.g., DO, MBBS, etc.) degree at a PGY-3 level at time of application, and be a member of the HMS Department of Psychiatry, for a stipend paid at the PGY-4 rate for 50% effort;
- For MDs: no more than five years have passed since the end of ACGME accredited clinical training at the time of application;
- For PhDs: no more than five years have passed since the end of the conferral of a doctoral degree, or required clinical postdoctoral fellowship at the time of application;
- At the time of application, applicants cannot hold a faculty appointment at the Assistant Professor level or higher;
- Applicants who have received an NIH R award as the PI are not eligible to apply;
- Applicants who have received an NIH K award are not eligible to apply for any of the salaried fellowship awards (i.e., Dupont Warren, Kaplen, Zinberg), but K award recipients are eligible for a Livingston award;
- Individuals who have already been awarded a Dupont Warren, Kaplen or Zinberg fellowship award will not be permitted to re-apply for any of those awards, EXCEPT if they initially received one of those awards to be used in their PGY-4 year at half-time effort for 1 year;
- An individual who receives a Livingston award in one year will be permitted to apply for and receive a salaried fellowship (i.e., Dupont Warren, Kaplen, Zinberg award) in a future year, but not for another Livingston award.
- Applicants may apply for multiple awards using the single general application form. However, **it will no longer be possible to receive both a salaried fellowship award (i.e., Dupont Warren, Kaplen, Zinberg fellowship) and a Livingston award in the same year**.
